Well, it is now June and we are nearing Michael Jackson's 2 year anniversary of death. It's time for this blog to switch gears, and help to publicize some of the incredible work that is done in honor of Michael. I found out about Dresses From Neverland from MJJJusticeProject. After reading their link, I went to FB to find out just what this project was all about.
Dresses From Neverland is one of the projects in the works by the group 2300 Make A Pact on Facebook. The site states that "co-founders and twin sisters Sheryl and Sherry Davis are honored by the opportunity to celebrate through advocacy the artist who inspired them since childhood." You can follow them on Twitter as 2300makeapact and their youtube channel is here.
So just what is Dresses From Neverland about? From their Facebook page, 2300 states that their aim is "to provide dresses for little girls whose families were recently afflicted by the historic levels of flooding and tornado outbreaks in Appalachia....We've decided to use pillowcases to make beautiful summer dresses for these girls, many of whom have lost everything due to natural disasters." As I read this, I thought how truly appropriate this project was in honor of Michael Jackson. As we all know, Michael was particularly sensitive to children and especially those who were sick or who lived in an area of natural disaster, wars, etc.
Donations that Dresses From Neverland is requesting:
1. Pillowcases (either new or gently used) with non-transparent material
3. Double-fold bias tape
4. Accessories for dresses (buttons, patches, appliques and ribbons)
The kickoff for this project was yesterday, June 1 and will end on July 22, 2011. All materials must be sent to 2300 by July 22, in order to give ample time for the dresses to be made and shipped by Michael's birthday on August 29.
Once all donations have been sent to 2300, they will make the dresses and ship them to the organization, Dress A Girl Around the World, which is part of Hope4KidsInternational. This group has delivered over 30,000 dresses in 36 different countries. Dress A Girl Around the World will then deliver the dresses to girls in the Appalachia. This project and others are what literally bring tears to my eyes. This is what Michael Jackson was all about...helping children, especially those in special need.
I am asking those who read this blog to please help get the word out about Dresses From Neverland. It is an incredible project that I believe Michael, his children, his family and friends would be honored to be a part of.
